June 28th, 2009 Sermon

Today’s sermon recording is still work-in-progress. The following is a modified version of our sermon adapted from our tweets.

Sermon is starting. True & False series continued. We begin the sermon by looking into the idea of navigation, direction, and nature’s elements that affect the course.

The end point of navigation and the direction to the endpoint do not change, but the nature’s elements (windward and leeward drift) affect the course, causing it to be on/off the original course at times.

Consider: Canon is our creed & ruler. It does not change. The Bible is our direction. It does not change. As Christians, we strive for righteousness and obedience (or endpoint) while dealing with changing social contexts (like leeward drift), which often affect our pursuit of righteousness.

Someone asks: What other acts today, besides homosexuality, are deemed sinful & forbidden in Christianity?

Read Acts 14: 21-28, 15:1-32.

In these passages, it indicates the authority makes the decisions, and the decision making is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The Q isn’t “How do we live with (being fine with) sin in this day & age?”

The Q is “How do we lead the sinful people back to righteousness and obedience?”

We can’t incorporate social context into our constant - Bible & Canon.

Who’s in this boat (Christianity), and how do we chart our course (towards righteousness and obedience)? Ephesians 4: 8-16.

Christ appointed apostles, pastors & teachers so we don’t need to bear the burden of interpreting the Bible. That is also the role of elder in our church. Trust in their leading, & focus on your pursuit of righteousness.

Lastly, contextualization is never an excuse for rebellion.

Ask the Lord, in that social context, “How do you continue on with the journey of righteousness?”

That is the end of our sermon today. Blessings on your week.

Sermon is starting. Truth & False series continued. Let’s look at Mark 12:13-17.

If the image of Caesar is discernable in the coin, Caesar has the right to the coin.

Give Caesar its coins, but give yourself to God.

We’re answering questions on Christians and homosexuality today.

Q: Why does the church have such a hard time taking a stance on one practicing as a homosexual?

Genesis 1:26-27 We’re made in the image of God. Pleasure and appeal do not determine how the image is to be used.

The one who has the right to the image has the right to determine how the image is to be used.

All rules are created to hinder and constrain natural, pleasing impulses. Genesis 9:5-6.

There’s a moral capacity to the image of God. If you decide to do what is appealing to yourself & affect others, you’re in rebellion to the Scripture.

The Q is not whether the church hates homosexuals. The Q is: Did God create them and has the right to their image?

The reason why church has such a hard time taking a stance is because of the immense social pressure not to be a city on a hill.

Ephesians 5:21-29 Submission is unnatural to many of us, that is the fall of mankind. Consider the Word of the Lord.

Mis-depicting the church from the gay community is as wrong as the church mis-depicting the gay community.

John 14: 15, 21. If you choose to live under God’s authority and operate in His image, then, obey.

Get ready! Here comes the sermon - True and False series continued…

Is it appropriate for you to want what you want and hate what (who) gets in the way of what you want?

Read Genesis 3:1-6. In here, authority is being challenged by personal desire.

Go to Matt 21:28-31. Who followed the will of the father?

Q: I’m under authority in which I see is broken, how should I follow and operate under it?

A: Go to Matt 7:1-2. When you see brokenness in authority, ask first, “By what criterion do you use to see its brokenness?”

Is our authority issues caused by our own behavior of trying to get our way but cannot? How should we respond to authority when the authority is operating within the lawful boundary?

1 Peter 2:13-25. Hebrews 5:7-9…from the perspective of Scripture, all authority on earth is broken, therefore, just obey.

Galatians 6:1-5. It is the authority whom the Lord will deal with. We are to approach and question the authority in the spirit of meekness.

That is the end of our service today. We will answer questions regarding Christianity and homosexuality next week. Blessings galore!

June 7th Sermon on Twitter @fwcommunity - True and False Series Continue…Authority

Ontic reality is a concept that there actually is a reality out there.

Multiple modes of truthing defines ontic reality.

Last week we started on the idea of authority, looking at the fallacies of authority.

We’ll be answering some congregants” questions today about authority.

John 6:38, John 8:29, John 5:30, John 14:28-31, John 12:49-50, John 15:10. John 22:42.

Was Jesus absolutely constrained by the will of the Father?

If we believe that Jesus is absolutely constrained by God and equal to God, His authority can’t be devalued.

Q: Regarding 1 Timothy 2:12. Why does it bother us? Who is in authority?

Institutions set up standards, law and order, codes of conduct accordingly.

Next Q: Is it truth that a husband is the head of the household biblically?

1 Corinthian 11:7, Ephesians 5:22-33. Imagine a world without authority. What would it look like?

Authority is a gift from God for the maintenance of order, for the prevention of chaos.

A husband lays down his life for his wife, cares for her tenderly, makes decisions so she’s not burdened to do so.

Husbands, provide for your family the image of Christ.

We’ll continue the Q&A on authority next Sunday. Blessings on you this week.

True and False series continue…

Two weeks ago we looked at the definition of truth, how it’s a perceptive event and how we frame our truth through our perceptions.

If truths were innate, nobody would have to be taught anything.

If we are unaware of the kinds of truths (perceptions) we are trying to apply, we would end up with very conflicting ideas.

What kind of questions you ask determines the kind of answers you get.

We will look at the definition of authority today. What is authority? It is the right to constrain behavior or to pronounce states of being.

Luke 22:24-26

Romans 13: 1-3, 6-7

Matthew 23: 1-3

Authority is not about being worthy or more valuable, being right or wrong, or being deserving or undeserving.

Consider the scripture; we will answer in depth what authority is next Sunday. May the Lord bless you this week. See you next Sunday!
